Description
One of the main Hahoe masks, the Bu-ne (young woman) mask is often seen paired with the Bu-ne mask. She is either a widow, a kisaeng (traditional courtesan who is learned in poetry, dance, and the arts) or the concubine of the aristocrat or scholar (seonbi). Haeho masks were known to have been used in Hahoe-tal (Hahoe mask, where Hahoe denotes a region in the Gyeongsamnam-do province in Korea) dances since the Chosun Dynasty.
Considered a masterpiece in mask art, this hand-carved and painted mask is a great addition to your mask collection.
Mask comes in a traditional pull-string pouch and can be given as a gift right away.
The Pune mask can be described as slender faced with crescent-shaped eyebrows, a high nose and a small mouth. This meets all the conditions of classical beauty by traditional Korean standards. In addition, a faint smile is evident around the eyes and mouth, while the slim nose nice. The cheeks aregenerally flat without bends. The black hair hangs down to the tips of the ears. This indentified a widow in those days. (Excerpt from the Hahoe Mask Museum website. To read more, click here.)
